The songs on Kick it Off are a mix of old and new, from a traditional chantey collected in the 1800s (South Australia), to a song I wrote last year (Stand Together). “This Dreadful Life I’m Livin'” was the first sea song that I ever learned to lead, and it seems fitting to put it on this first album. I find all of these songs empowering and I love to sing them with my friends, and that’s one of my favorite kinds of music to make!
I found out early this year that I’d been invited to perform at the 40th Annual Mystic Sea Music Festival, and wanted to have an album ready for that. With such tight timelines, and a desire to sing with a large group of friends and do a good handful of tracks, the timing was tricky. But my crew was enthusiastic and dedicated, and we got things recorded just in time to have this CD in hand for the festival. I have much gratitude to the friends who helped make this project happen!
